Fast Track to Degregation

23 year-old Joseph Cassano, son of New York City Fire Commissioner, Salvatore Cassano, is working as a FDNY EMT and is ” in a apparent bid to fast track his promotion to firefighter”, states the New York Post report titled ‘Fast-tracker’ son of FDNY Commish rants again blacks and Jews on Twitter. However, his use of Twitter to display various prejudices against black people, women and Jews, and his job are not benefiting his success.

Cassano’s tweet regarding his wife can be a form of misogyny. Misogyny is a hatred or a sexual objectification of women. In this tweet, he is referencing his wife’s breasts as a way to produce his own happiness. One could also argue that money is not a problem for Cassano when it comes to this tweet stating that he doesn’t care if he makes a lot of money. For many, jobs are hard to come by, especially with the economy the way it is. However, he appears to feel secure with his position.

Other tweets such as these make prejudices against African American’s and Jews apparent. Cassano’s first tweet about Jews is considered Antisemitism. According to Jessie Daniels, who wrote the article, Race, Civil Rights, and Hate Speech in the Digital Era, antisemitism is considered the discrimination against Jews for reason connected to their Jewish religion.

Cassano also tweeted earlier this month: ““I hate ems” and, “Everybody wanna be a firefighter, but don’t nobody wanna be a damn EMT.” This is an example of white privilege. In an article previously read in class, Scalzi’s metaphor for white privilege was referred to as a video game. In this analogy, white males get the easiest level, whereas minorities, are placed on a more difficult level. Scalzi’s view on privilege exemplifies the idea that people with more privileges can determine their destiny. Scalzi’s theory plays a major role in Cassano’s position. His father, who is New York City Commissioner, has helped pave the road for his son to become a potential firefighter. These privileges of having his father at a higher level, has given him the upper edge in the hiring process. Competitors who have no connections, but are equally if not more qualified for the position will get places at a “lower level” due to their lack of privileges. We live in a world where we have the opportunity to reap benefits from those that we have connections with in higher places. People depend on these connections, and it might appear as if people struggle to get to their desired positions without some sort of assistance The phrase, “it’s not what you know, but who you know” seems to be illustrated in our society. Some people tend to take a greater advantage to this assistance than others. These advantages are considered privileges that members in our society receive. These privileges not only play a role in family connections, but in race as well.

FDNY is famous for their lack of diversity. “EMT members get first crack at joining FDNY as firefighters under new federal diversity rules that put them ahead of ‘open competitive’ applicants to the Fire Academy.Those rules were adopted after federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis found that the FDNY had for years discriminated against minorities. Critics say the EMS gig allows Cassano and his well-connected co-workers a shortcut into the FDNY”, the Post reports. These rules might sound “fair”, but yet it also states that EMS gives workers such as Cassano a shortcut. This is an example of abstract liberalism, where “equal opportunity” and “choice” are used to ignore racial inequalities. The federal diversity rules present these cases that appear to have equal opportunity to all, but yet certain employees get an advantage which isn’t technically fair or equal.

These tweets by Joseph Cassano have not only made it apparent that racism can emerge on many internet sites, but it also shows that racism is still an ongoing problem in the world today. Many people throughout the world use minimization of racism, which refers to the idea that many white’s believe that race and racism no longer affect minorities lives today and allows them to disregard racial motivations for various actions.

In this article, many issues have became evident such as the different frames of colorblindness, white privilege, racial discrimination, and sexism. These forms, especially racism, are a form of overt hate speech. Many other examples regarding racial comments on social medias also illustrate this idea of over hate speech. According to an article previously cited by Jessie Daniels, over hate speech is a kind of explicitly racist language that is widely regarded as unacceptable public expressions of racism in the contemporary political climate in the United States. These tweets have followed this hate speech due to the fact that they were offensive comments that were made public for viewers to see. Regardless of the privacy settings that might have been on his account, it wasn’t likely that none of his followers would be offended by any of those comments. However, these comments that were willingly displayed on a social networking site, have ruined Cassano’s chances at following his father’s footsteps.

Technology has changed throughout the years, especially with new networking sites. This personal information was not available for employers years ago. However, social networking sites are used more frequently by employers to vouch for someone’s character. By putting things on the internet, your information will be available for anyone to see. Like many people, Joseph Cassano has ruined his career and his future by posting these racial comments on the internet. I believe that social networking sites such as twitter and facebook should be checked before hiring and during to keep in check with all employees. Due to the fact that these tweets by an employee could make a company as a whole look terrible, I feel as if this would be very beneficial to employers to have access to. In conclusion, these tweets have shown that racial is still apparent in society today, and it is still an ongoing struggle that can hopefully be solved someday.
